A DIY Enthusiast’s Curtain Story: Getting Curtains “Exactly the Way I Want”

In this feature, we visit Lily’s home to talk about her approach to curtains. To her, they’re more than window coverings—they’re a way to express the homeowner’s personality.

Curtains take up a surprising amount of visual real estate. The right fabric and finish don’t just control light—they shape the mood of the entire room.

Why are you so particular about curtains?

They command a large portion of the visual field at home. Great curtains not only modulate light but also alter the room’s atmosphere. I don’t want them to be just “light blockers.” I want them to reflect my taste—something that makes me happy every time I see them.

We heard you once searched several stores for a specific valance?

Yes! I wanted a vintage-style scalloped valance in deep green velvet, but nothing off the rack matched what I had in mind. I emailed a seller with my sketch, reference images, and measurements. They said they could custom-make it and even suggested better proportions for my ceiling height. That’s when I realized: communication is the key to getting curtains that truly feel like mine.

My Shopping Checklist

  • Valance & header styles: straight headers, scalloped valances, pinch pleats, or tassel trims.
  • Fabric feel: the natural texture of linen, the richness of velvet, or breezy cotton–linen blends.
  • Functional details: blackout lining, tiebacks, and chosen mounting method (track or pole).
  • Color harmony: coordinate with walls, flooring, and key furniture pieces.

Do you make small DIY adjustments yourself?

Absolutely. I’m not a professional sewer, but I love adding personal touches. My tips: draw a quick sketch; collect reference photos; measure carefully; and try light DIY—swap tiebacks, sew on buttons, or add a trim. Small details make ready-mades feel custom.

Quick DIY Tips

  • Sketch first — clearer than words alone.
  • Build a reference board — Pinterest & Instagram are gold mines.
  • Measure precisely — window width/height and mounting method.
  • Communicate early — ask sellers about custom options.
  • Keep DIY light — trims, buttons, and tiebacks add personality.

Any final advice for fellow home lovers?

Don’t hesitate to ask for what you want, and don’t fear a little back-and-forth. Your “ideal curtain” is absolutely achievable—even if it takes a touch of DIY. A home is worth the effort.
